Week 5: Prost!

Willkommen!

We left Italy and headed north to join in the Oktoberfest festivities!  Our time in Germany actually began on Saturday, with a lot of beer:

We had signed up for a virtual Oktoberfest event that sent us these 10 beers in the mail (along with a pathetic plastic stein).  Our friends also signed up and we had a lovely time tasting beers together over video chat.  My favorites among this bunch were the classic German lagers.  Some of the more adventures ones (like the pumpkin flavored Smashed Pumpkin from Shipyard and Roadsmary's Baby and)... not so much.  But it was fun to try them all!  There was even one flavored like a Glazed Donut.

Prost!

Richard occasionally cooks schnitzel and sausages as part our our regular non-themed dinners, so for this week we wanted it to be something new. Which brings me to...

Sauerbraten with red cabbage and crispy pretzel dumplings!  This was extremely delicious.  We have a local German butcher shop near us called Dittmer's that we picked up the beef from.  They also sell amazing pretzels from across the street at Esther’s German Bakery that went into the pretzel dumplings.

Next week we continue the tour of Europe by heading to... Scandinavia!  This one is kind of a curve ball I threw at Richard so I'm excited to see what he comes up with!

  3. Yeah, I just can’t do that pumpkin ale. Other than the meatballs, not sure what the Swedes cook up. Guess we will see...
